Overview

This doctorate trains future researchers and scholars to investigate central areas of computer engineering: processor and system design, the design of chips, computing with light, large-scale high-speed computing, and computing across networks. Doctoral students collaborate closely with an advisor, from the faculty, in the area they select to shape a plan of study and direct their dissertation. They are also expected to teach beginning undergraduate classes, share findings at conferences, and assist professors in preparing grant applications for research funding. Fall and spring admission are open to all applicants, while a limited number of summer places exist for applicants who do not need a visa from the university. The GRE is optional for all applicants, and those who choose to submit it must have scores sent officially. Three recommendations are needed, ideally including one from the applicant's previous advisor, together with transcripts and other application items.
