PhD in Computer Engineering

Boston University invites applicants who hold either a bachelor's or a master's degree to its doctoral program in computer engineering. Each student studies a subject matched to their own interests and those of a faculty research advisor, with theoretical and experimental work, and ties to industry and government labs are welcomed. Living in Boston places students inside an active technology research scene where partnerships with other universities and employers are routine. Candidates are expected to add something new and meaningful to the field, evidenced by papers, presentations and an approved thesis, and to explain their research well when defending a prospectus and thesis. The amount of coursework depends on the starting degree, with a larger load for those entering after a bachelor's. Teaching practicum courses and responsible-conduct-of-research training also form part of the plan.
