Chemistry at Indiana State is offered as a bachelor's degree preparing students for industry, graduate school or professional school. The curriculum covers the five recognized branches: analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic and physical chemistry.
Students use modern instruments of the sort found at large research universities while working closely with faculty, and undergraduate participation in faculty-mentored research is a defining feature. Research areas range from biochemistry and bioinformatics to materials science, medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis.
Seminars feature speakers from universities and companies, and also recent department alumni. Graduates find jobs as chemists, lab managers and scientists across industry, government and universities.
The department also invites students to explore degree maps outlining how the chemistry curriculum fits together. Indiana State takes transfer credit from regionally accredited U.S. colleges and from selected schools abroad, and may also award credit for military training, so earlier coursework can count toward the degree.
