The chemistry major develops research skills on top of a core that covers analytical, organic, physical and inorganic chemistry and biochemistry. Advanced offerings extend to materials chemistry, computational methods and biological chemistry, with project-based laboratory courses that use research instruments.
There are two options. Option A leads to American Chemical Society certification and can be combined with minors in other sciences, mathematics or computer science, or with the MMEDIC medical and dental integrated curriculum. Option B asks for one fewer course, giving more room for electives, and may also lead to certification.
Majors are described as well prepared for graduate study, chemical research, teaching, industry, regulatory work and premedical training, and most take part in research. Once the opening course of the general or organic chemistry sequence is taken, the track cannot be changed.
