Overview
James Madison University's music school offers two degrees: a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Auditions play a role in admission and in access to lessons.
The B.M. is a professional degree where music makes up at least 65 percent of credits. Students take lessons for three to four years, join ensembles for seven to eight semesters and give at least one recital.
The B.A. is a liberal arts degree with roughly 45 percent of credits in music, leaving space for other interests. Admission involves an interview, plus a portfolio review for the Music Industry concentration. Students perform in ensembles for four semesters and finish a capstone guided by a faculty mentor.
