The doctoral degree in food science is interdepartmental and is delivered on campus only. Applicants must already hold a master's degree.
The degree requires at least 90 semester hours, including a dissertation based on a minimum amount of research credit. Students with a master's degree may transfer part of that work. After the master's, the supervisory committee normally requires further coursework, and some of it must be at an advanced numbering level. No foreign language is required.
The committee can assign extra undergraduate courses to fill gaps in preparation. Transfer credit needs a grade of B or better, and only A, B and C grades count as graduate credit. Applicants can consult the graduate program chair with questions, and the university graduate course catalog lists the classes that count toward the degree. Candidates should check the program chair for guidance on prerequisites.
