BA/BS in Physics

Physics at Mount Holyoke is presented as a way to understand why the world behaves as it does and to take part in designing new technology. Students might be drawn to topics like better solar cells, nanotechnology for faster and smaller computers, or computer models of how fluids move and mix. The department stresses attentive, individual teaching and gives every student access to current research. Its faculty acknowledge that physics cannot explain everything, but they aim to equip students with the tools to pursue answers independently, including some of the largest open scientific questions. Both a major and a minor are available, and the degree is a Bachelor of Arts. The department is shared with astronomy. Incoming students are placed into the proper first course according to prior physics and calculus work, with placement exams available for those whose background does not match the standard prerequisites.
