Philosophy investigates what exists, what can be known, how to reason well, how language works and how to act, through metaphysics, epistemology, logic and ethics, and it also extends to the philosophy of the arts, legal thought, medicine, the mind, politics, religion and the sciences.
The department's aim is to help students identify, clarify and assess answers to these questions. The major prepares students for advanced study and for fields that reward analytic thinking and argument, such as law, business and medicine. Majors can request entry to an honors track by contacting the department's undergraduate director.
Prospective undergraduates can consult the university bulletin page for the full list of required courses, the credit structure of the major and the criteria for honors study. Advisers in the department help students plan their sequence of courses alongside the wider requirements of their school, and many students combine the major with other fields of interest.
