The Fire Protection Technology degree at Onondaga Community College is described by the college as the only one in New York State that includes national firefighter certification, so graduates may qualify for firefighting jobs across the country.
Students learn firefighting tactics and strategies, hazardous materials control, water flow in fire fighting, and managing safety. They also study every area of fire prevention and build the skills needed to meet the demands of the work.
Combined with certification, the degree prepares graduates for municipal services, emergency medical services, fire prevention, fire safety in industry, or enforcing building codes. Classes are held in person.
As a career program, it is oriented toward employment soon after completion rather than transfer. Prospective students can request information, schedule a visit, or talk with college staff before applying, and financial aid specialists are available to explain how to pay for study.
