Overview

Medieval Europe contained many distinct regional cultures, yet people of the period also worked to build a shared picture of the world that joined faith-based and social ideals, Latin along with vernacular writing, as well as music and painting. Subjects now handled by separate departments were seldom divided in those centuries. Medieval studies mirrors that unity by bringing them together in a multidisciplinary way. Students assemble their understanding from literature, history, art, music and religion, learning to read sources from the era in context. The approach cultivates patience with unfamiliar worldviews and skill in connecting evidence across fields. It leads naturally to graduate study, library and museum work, teaching, writing and other careers where historical imagination and careful research are valued. Students who like puzzles in old manuscripts and images will find plenty to pursue.
