Chemistry students build lab technique, numerical reasoning and analytical thinking to address fundamental questions about the world. The curriculum is approved by the American Chemical Society and mixes small lectures with hands-on laboratories.
Students build a foundation in organic, analytical, physical and inorganic chemistry plus biochemistry, with opportunities to apply skills to interdisciplinary topics. Faculty rather than graduate assistants teach all required chemistry courses, giving students individual attention and feedback.
The major fits students on a pre-med track or another route into health careers. Graduates serve as lab scientists at hospitals, start-ups, large companies and universities, or enter drug development, environmental health, law, forensics and manufacturing. About a third of majors continue to doctoral programs in chemistry. The major is part of the department covering biochemistry, chemistry, environment and physics in the College of Arts and Sciences.
