Program details

Overview

The public relations major teaches students to speak for organizations and shape how audiences see them. Foundational courses cover the field's history, theory, trends and practices, alongside writing for the profession, digital channels, website design and planning events. The degree can be taken as a BS or as a BA. Advanced classes have them plan campaigns and events on behalf of business or nonprofit clients. Social media courses are woven into the curriculum, and students who want more can complete a separate social media minor. Every major completes a professional internship, usually in senior year though junior year is possible, and may take two semester-long placements for credit. A public relations minor is also available, built around fundamentals, research, persuasive writing and promoting events, plus one elective.
