The Religion program studies belief and practice through historical, social-scientific and theological perspectives. Students look at diverse peoples, texts and ways of life, and they ask how religion has caused both division and community and has shaped politics, personal life and history. Small classes allow professors to give personalised attention. Courses connect to current issues and popular culture and include site visits around Indianapolis. Students can pursue experiential learning, with career paths in nonprofit organisations, religious institutions, ministry, social work and chaplaincy. Concentrations extend the major. A pre-theology concentration, led by the university chaplain, offers Christian vocation courses and an internship, while a comparative religions concentration examines ritual, practice and a range of traditions ranging across Christianity, Buddhism and the relationship between religion and magic. Faculty bring varied backgrounds and active research to the classroom.
