The speech and hearing science major focuses on the typical speech, hearing and language function. It prepares students to enter graduate training in speech pathology or the clinical audiology doctorate. The bachelor's degree alone does not qualify graduates to practice professionally; a master's is the minimum for speech pathologists and a clinical doctorate is needed for audiologists. Iowa was among the earliest universities to teach and research this field systematically.
