The Social Science Analytics certificate gives students practical training in collecting, analyzing and interpreting data about society. It is an interdisciplinary offering run by the political science department with contributions from several other departments in the Liberal Arts and Sciences college. Coursework spans core statistics, research design, data analysis, building data science skills and an applied research experience. Students work with techniques such as geospatial data, network data and text analysis of social media, speeches and news coverage. Any University of Iowa student may earn the certificate, provided they are not at the same time working toward a graduate or professional degree here. The certificate sits alongside a student's regular studies and is listed on the university admissions site, where applicants can request information or start an application.
