PhD in Plant Sciences

The doctoral track in plant and soil sciences prepares students to lead research, education and industry work in agriculture and the environment. Students may also choose a thesis or non-thesis master's degree within the same graduate program. The curriculum ranges across sustainable farming, how plants function, molecular methods, biotechnology, plant diseases, ecology, production technology, soils and the marketing of agricultural products. Training, hands-on experience and individual mentoring are central to the program. Candidates should expect a research-intensive course of study guided by an advisor, and the page notes that some arrangements for admission depend on a faculty advisor's request. Faculty advising and mentoring shape each student's plan of study, which can draw on agricultural and environmental topics ranging from molecular work to marketing.
