MA/MS in Philosophy

The Master of Arts in Philosophy at the University of Miami suits students who want to study the subject more deeply than an undergraduate degree allows, as well as those moving into philosophy from another discipline. Many students also use it to strengthen an application to a doctoral program elsewhere. Coursework is flexible, since the department sets no distribution requirements and lets students shape their plan around their own interests. The degree combines graduate philosophy courses with thesis research, and every student writes a thesis and defends it orally in the spring of the second year. A completed thesis can double as a writing sample. Admission to the master's program is handled separately from the department's doctoral admission, so it does not guarantee a later place in the Ph.D. program.
