Cert in Religion/Religious Studies

Religious studies treats religion as a subject of academic analysis, looking at how it operates across cultures, eras and places. The field matters because religion has been among the strongest forces shaping human behavior, historically and now. Milwaukee takes an interdisciplinary approach, drawing on anthropology, architecture, art, classics, literary study, Jewish studies, history and philosophy. Students therefore meet religious traditions through varied methods and sources, not only through texts. A major and a minor are offered. The degree develops cultural literacy, comparative thinking and strong writing, which suit careers in education, social services, public affairs, communications and nonprofit work, and which provide a base for graduate study in religion or related humanities fields. Students gain tools for understanding diverse communities in a pluralistic society.
