BA/BS in Physics

Vassar's combined physics and astronomy department gives students a demanding program of study alongside an active research agenda. Learners work in an environment that stresses hands-on experience. Faculty keep refining and trying out teaching methods, and they pursue research that opens ample opportunities for undergraduates. Majors are prepared for graduate work in physics and astronomy and also in engineering, education and medicine. The department additionally teaches courses meant to build scientific literacy among students who are not majoring in the sciences. Department news has covered visiting scientists speaking about a new observatory and work on dark matter. The program sits within the liberal arts curriculum at Vassar College, so students are able to combine it with study in other departments and programs across the college as they plan their courses.
