Program details

Overview

The Science, Technology, and Society program examines science and technology within their social, cultural and historical settings. It began in the early 1970s and was an early example of such a program at an undergraduate institution. The curriculum engages the links between scientific and technological change and the political, economic, philosophical and historical contexts that shape them and are shaped by them. Students aim to see why science and technology matter so much in modern society and to examine how both reflect the circumstances around them. Vassar describes its version as distinctive for how flexible it is for majors and for the closeness it encourages between students and teachers. The program sits within the liberal arts curriculum at Vassar College, so students are able to combine it with study in other departments and programs across the college as they plan their courses.
