Wayne State's history doctorate allows students to pursue doctoral study in American or European history alongside faculty doing research across many geographic and topical areas. The doctoral program is small, which brings modest class sizes and close mentoring as students develop an independent research project.
Training covers historical methods, field-specific knowledge, teaching skills and professional development. Most doctoral students are given tuition scholarships covering some or all of the program, and some receive funding packages with a stipend, medical benefits and teaching experience.
Recent graduates teach at universities, colleges and schools or work in publishing, nonprofit organizations and academic administration. Students often add certificates in archival administration, nonprofit management or world history at the same time to widen their career options.
