Cert in Geography and Cartography

This certificate trains professionals in geographic information science, a field in which governments and businesses rely on location-based data to track inventory, manage resources and make decisions. It is delivered in a hybrid format that mixes online study with in-person classes and applied learning. Applications taught in the courses include mapping natural hazards, analyzing crime data and managing resources. Students work with tools usually reserved for graduate students elsewhere, such as GPS equipment, drones and a supercomputer. Each course ends with a project the student designs independently, such as mapping lake pollution or city compliance with accessibility law. Students choose among tracks according to their experience, and the full certificate can be earned in a single year spanning fall, spring and summer along with a winter session.
