Biology at Wilkes is offered as a major and a minor. It is meant to prepare students for graduate school, medical school and careers in business, government, nonprofit organizations and education. Professors emphasize teaching and make a point of bringing undergraduates into research, with some students starting real projects in their first year. The wide-ranging curriculum touches on the molecular and cellular levels of life, how organisms are built and operate, ecological and evolutionary processes, and the study of plants. Outdoor fieldwork is supported by a large wooded property with streams that the university owns, which serves as a living laboratory.
