Overview
Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning, also known as Dechinta Bush University, is a land-based Indigenous post-secondary institution on the homelands of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation in Denendeh/Northwest Territories, near Yellowknife.
Founded in 2010, it delivers intensive land-based courses and multi-week gatherings that blend Dene and other northern Indigenous knowledge systems with academic study, bringing students, Elders, knowledge-holders and northern academics together on the land rather than in a conventional campus building. Dechinta has a long-standing affiliation with the University of Alberta, which predates its 2015 partnership with the University of British Columbia.
Since partnering with the University of British Columbia in 2015, its ongoing coursework - offered under UBC course codes such as INLB 210 and INLB 220 - builds toward Dechinta's own Certificate in Land and Community-Based Research, earned on completion of five UBC-accredited courses. Dechinta also partners with Aurora College and the Collège Nordique Francophone, and belongs to the University of the Arctic (UArctic) network.
To remove barriers that keep northern Indigenous students, particularly women and parents, out of post-secondary education, Dechinta provides free on-site childcare, counselling and health support alongside its academic programming.
Its work rests on three pillars: accredited post-secondary study, research that supports the preservation and transmission of Indigenous knowledge, and community programming that reconnects generations to the land.
