Founded 1900 as Dongwu University (Suzhou).
Following the China colleges and departments restructuration policy, the Dongwu University Institute of Arts and Science, Sunan Institute of Culture and Education, the Jjiangnan University Institute of Mathematics merged into the newly established Sunan Teachers Institute 1952. Acquired present title 1982.
Incorporated Suzhou College of Sericulture 1995, Suzhou Institute of Silk Technology 1997 and Suzhou Medical College 2000. Part of "211 Project" universities.
