Founded 1941 through merger of Shanbei Public School with the Woman’s University of China, the Zedong School of Young Cadres.
The College of Natural Sciences, the College of Nationalities and the Luxun Arts and Humanties College were incorporated. Following the Sino-Japanese War the Yan'an University was rebuilded 1958.
Acquired present status 1998 through the merger with Yan'an Medical College, Yan'an People Medical College. Under the administration of Shaanxi Province
