Overview
The Seychelles Maritime Academy (SMA) is the national provider of maritime and fisheries training, based at Providence on Mahe.
It delivers Seychelles Qualifications Authority-accredited programmes in Ocean Navigation and Seamanship, Marine Engineering and Mechanics, and Fishing Science and Technology, awarding cadets Certificates, Advanced Certificates and diploma-level qualifications alongside globally recognised seafarer competency training. Since 2013 the Academy's management has been strengthened through a renewed partnership with Sri Lanka's Colombo International Nautical and Engineering College (CINEC Campus), repeatedly extended to build institutional capacity and align training with international maritime conventions.
SMA cross-certifies graduates with the Seychelles Maritime Safety Authority for the statutory competency certificates required to work at sea. The Academy has signed cooperation agreements with sister post-secondary institutions, including a 2023 memorandum of understanding with the Seychelles Tourism Academy, and has publicised ambitions to attract international students to its cadet and safety-training courses.
As a state training institution supporting Seychelles' fisheries and shipping industries, SMA is publicly funded and operates under government oversight, with its graduation ceremonies regularly attended by senior government figures.
Its diploma-level navigation, engineering and fisheries awards place it within the country's recognised tertiary training landscape.
