How the KUCCPS Cluster Points Formula Works

The official square-root formula. KUCCPS computes weighted cluster points as C = √((r ÷ 48) × (t ÷ 84)) × 48, where r is the sum of points in the four cluster subjects defined for your target degree, R = 48 is the cluster maximum (4 × A grade at 12 points), t is your total KCSE points across the best seven subjects, and T = 84 is the KCSE seven-subject maximum (7 × A). The square-root term smooths out subject-only spikes by weighting them against your overall KCSE performance, so a candidate with four A's in the cluster but a weak overall mean still cannot reach 48.

The 12-point KCSE grading scale. Each KCSE letter grade maps to a fixed point value: A = 12, A− = 11, B+ = 10, B = 9, B− = 8, C+ = 7, C = 6, C− = 5, D+ = 4, D = 3, D− = 2, E = 1. The dropdowns above use this exact scale. The mean-grade band shown for your total points is an indicative estimate only — KNEC sets the official aggregate-to-grade boundaries afresh each year, so treat it as a rough guide rather than a fixed published table.

Cluster subjects are programme-specific. KUCCPS publishes a different set of four required subjects for every degree cluster — Medicine demands Biology, Chemistry, Physics/Maths and English/Kiswahili; Law leans on English, Kiswahili plus two humanities; Engineering pivots on Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and a fourth. Always confirm the cluster-subject list for your specific programme on the KUCCPS portal before placement.

The regulatory trap. Informal calculators frequently treat the formula as a simple ratio (r ÷ 48) × 48 = r, which would mean "your cluster points equal the sum of your four subject points." That is wrong. The official KUCCPS formula multiplies the cluster ratio by the overall KCSE ratio before taking the square root, which is why two candidates with identical four cluster grades can end up with different cluster points if their wider seven-subject performance differs. This tool enforces the full square-root expression so the surfaced cluster points cannot exceed reality.

Falsification defence. The calculator clamps t between 7 and 84 and each cluster grade between 1 and 12. A candidate cannot enter cluster points that exceed the total points (because the four cluster subjects must come from inside your seven best). When the cluster sum exceeds what the overall KCSE points could justify, the advisory banner flags the inconsistency rather than reporting a falsely inflated score.

Cut-off vs cluster points. Your cluster points are your score; the cut-off is the lowest cluster-point value at which a given programme actually admitted the last candidate in the previous cycle. A high cluster-point figure does not guarantee placement — only outscoring the prior-year cut-off for that course does.
