BA/BS in Anishinaabe Studies

This Bachelor of Arts in Anishinaabe Studies is delivered through Shingwauk Kinoomaage Gamig in partnership with Algoma University, based at the Sault Ste. Marie campus; a related three-year BA in Anishinaabemowin and an Interdisciplinary Aboriginal Learning certificate are also offered. The program centres Anishinaabe history, philosophy, and worldview, examining the history and effects of colonization on Anishinaabe peoples alongside contemporary social issues and both traditional and academic research methodologies. Coursework spans introductory Anishinaabemowin language instruction, history, law and politics, English, music, visual arts, social work, and community development, with Elders involved in the curriculum. The program suits students seeking a culture-based education rooted in Anishinaabe knowledge systems, whether Indigenous or non-Indigenous. Graduates pursue roles such as educator, linguist, civil servant, or policy maker, and work in social services, governance, and education, with the program also preparing students for further study at the honours or master's level.
