This four-year Bachelor of Arts in Community, Economic, and Social Development (CESD) is described by Algoma University as the only undergraduate program of its kind in Canada. The interdisciplinary curriculum draws on CESD, social work, Anishinaabe studies, economics, and business administration, with a focus on smaller urban, rural, northern, and Indigenous communities. Students choose one of two specializations: Local Economic Autonomy or Community Services and Equity Studies. Coursework is intended to build the knowledge needed to advocate for change and work toward economic and social justice within these community contexts. The combination of development theory, social work practice, and economics coursework distinguishes the program from a standard economics or social work degree, preparing graduates for roles in community economic development, non-profit and government agencies, and further study in related social science fields.
