Overview

Overview Preserve ecosystems for the future - explore a career in the environmental sciences! The two-year Environmental Technician program, delivered in a compressed format over 42 weeks, offers theoretical and extensive practical education in all areas of environmental sciences. You explore the disciplines of biology, chemistry, physical science and engineering as you learn to collect, measure and analyze variables commonly considered in environmental studies. Gain field and laboratory experience in soil, water and air testing as you develop a basic knowledge of: freshwater environment systems soils and landforms the chemistry of pollutants ecological processes Use the appropriate tools and equipment needed in biology, hydrology,ecological field sampling and analytical chemistry. This program includes applied research projects that allow you to apply skills and theory to real environmental issues, all while supporting important community initiatives, such as: water quality monitoring and implementation of agricultural best management practices in the Muskrat Lake watershed environmental assessment analysis and reporting for a real local municipal project soil testing, weather/climate monitoring, contaminated site assessment, and wildlife and vegetation sampling Upon graduation, you are ready to help meet the current and growing need for skilled entry-level practitioners within the environmental sciences sector. Graduates may find entry-level employment in roles such as: remediation technician field sampling technician geographical information systems (GIS) technician contaminated site assessor environmental assessor water and wastewater facility operator environmental consultant

Requirements

Admission Requirements: College Eligibility requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or Mature Student status for applicants 19 or older without a diploma. Program Eligibility adds Grade 12 English (ENG4C or equivalent) and Grade 12 Mathematics (MAP4C or equivalent); Grade 11 or 12 Biology and Chemistry are strongly recommended but not mandatory. For the Sept 2027 - Aug 2028 intake, international applicants must meet Algonquin's English Language Proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic overall band 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band, the Duolingo English Test at 110 overall with no component below 95, or TOEFL iBT at the score Algonquin publishes for the test's current format; the college publishes separate, higher English Language Proficiency scores for the Sept 2026 - Aug 2027 intake. Where qualified applicants exceed available places, Algonquin selects on English and mathematics proficiency; no minimum GPA is published for domestic applicants.

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca: for September 2027 entry the application portal opens 26 September 2026, the equal consideration date is 1 February 2027, and offers must be accepted by 1 May 2027, while later applications are still assessed as space allows; Algonquin publishes no separate equal-consideration date for the January 2027 intake. International applicants apply directly via Algonquin's own International Application Portal, not ontariocolleges.ca; instead of one fixed date the college posts a program-by-program closing-date list shortly before each term starts - for Fall 2026 most programs closed 16 September 2026, technology programs by 9-10 September; no Winter 2027 or Fall 2027 international list has been posted yet, so admission remains effectively rolling until each list is published and fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
