Techniques de génie mécanique (DEC 241.A0) is a technical program at Cégep de Sorel-Tracy that trains mechanical engineering technicians for work in manufacturing and high-technology industries. The curriculum covers technical drawing and design, manufacturing and machining processes, production management, quality control, and industrial maintenance, combining classroom instruction with hands-on work using machine tools and computer-aided design software. The program uses a workplace-learning model the college calls apprentissage en milieu de travail, under which part of a student's training takes place directly with regional manufacturing partners rather than solely on campus. Graduates of a related vocational diploma (DEP) in Techniques d'usinage can also enter through a recognized bridging pathway that credits some of their prior training toward the DEC. The program suits students who enjoy precise, hands-on technical projects, want to build skills with machine tools and computers, and are drawn to teamwork, planning and growing independence and judgment on the job. It leads to technical roles in mechanical design, production, and maintenance within manufacturing and industrial settings.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Domestic admission requires a Quebec Diploma of Secondary Studies (DES) or Diploma of Vocational Studies (DEP) with passes in Secondary V language of instruction, Secondary V second language, and Secondary IV mathematics, per Cégep de Sorel-Tracy's general college admission conditions. This programme's own prerequisites add Secondary IV Mathématique Technico-Sciences (TS) or Sciences Naturelles (SN), or Secondary V Culture, société et technique (CST), or the equivalent; a make-up course for the Secondary IV TS mathematics prerequisite runs at the Cégep each fall, and applicants who have not passed it before the term starts are redirected into the Tremplin DEC bridging programme. Secondary V Physics or the equivalent is also required. Applications go through SRAM (admission.sram.qc.ca) under the regular-candidate option, with a non-refundable $30 fee. International applicants are admitted for the Fall session only and, unless they studied in French, in Quebec, in France, or at an accredited French lycée, must submit a French-proficiency test result — Bright Language, TCF tout public, DELF tout public (minimum level B2), DALF, or TEF — plus an $85 CAD SRAM application-analysis fee, by the 14 March deadline.
