Overview

The certificate provides an academic pathway into community services or child studies careers, building understanding of the personal and professional requirements across the field's varied roles. Through reflective practice, students develop professional skills and communication competence across all language strands, along with academic habits intended to support success in their chosen diploma programme. The curriculum includes eight hours of English study each week and a peer mentoring component, and graduates earn two transfer credits toward diploma programmes in community and child studies.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This certificate requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent, or mature-applicant status at 19 or older, plus Grade 12 English at the C or U level, or equivalent, or Centennial's own English Admission Test. The page notes that applicants to Centennial's community-studies or child-and-family-studies programs who score 140 or 141 on Centennial's English Skills Assessment are advised to take this program first, as a pathway into their program of choice. The program page defers its general English-proficiency standard to Centennial's institution-wide requirement, which for certificate and diploma programs sets IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 67, and PTE Academic 51. No minimum admission GPA is published. The availability table currently lists only a Winter 2027 (January) intake.
