Overview
Please note: Programs currently offered at the Story Arts Centre will move to our Progress Campus in Fall 2026. Contemporary Journalism is a three-semester graduate certificate program that will explore new tools, trends and directions in journalism while emphasizing sourced, credible and verifiable storytelling. You'll learn in an interactive environment with courses covering news reporting, writing, editing and visual storytelling while exploring social media, mobile and emerging technologies (virtual reality), and multimedia storytelling and data journalism. In a digital world, the smartphone is increasingly the newsroom for journalists and the living room for the audience. The Contemporary Journalism program will emphasize using mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, to source, produce and share credible multimedia journalism. The program will culminate with entrepreneurial and professional practice elements, during which you'll demonstrate and refine your skills in today's rapidly evolving media environment. Admission Requirements: The programme requires a degree or diploma in any discipline; admission is not conditional on further academic prerequisites beyond that credential, though applicants submit a resume or complete an intake questionnaire. English proficiency follows Centennial's institution-wide requirement for graduate-certificate programmes: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 81 (minimum 19 Reading, 23 Writing), PTE Academic 60 or higher, or Duolingo 125 or higher. All admitted students also complete an English-language assessment at registration; those below the required level must take ENGL-700 Professional English Communications or the prerequisite English COMM course before continuing. Attendance at a mandatory online Program Welcome Session before the start is also required. No portfolio or interview is listed.

Application Deadline:Centennial publishes no application deadline for this program; what follows is the Ontario college cycle that governs it. Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca: for a program starting in Fall 2027 the equal-consideration date is 1 February 2027, and applications arriving after it are still assessed, but first-come first-served while places remain. Across the Ontario college system the application opened on 26 September 2026, offers may be issued from 1 November 2026, and an offer must be accepted by 1 May 2027. One $150 fee covers up to five program choices. International applicants apply directly to Centennial through its own international application process and are assessed on a rolling basis across the Fall, Winter and Summer intakes; the college publishes no fixed international closing date. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
