BA/BS in Neuroscience

Neuroscience at Dalhousie University leads to a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts, offered by the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience in the Faculty of Science, with study at the Halifax campus and, in part, at Truro and Bible Hill, and entry in September or January. The program studies the nervous system at multiple levels, from molecules and neurons to brain circuits and behaviour, with coursework in neuroanatomy, learning and memory, sensation, perception, and cognition. Students can complete the degree as a concentrated or combined honours, a major, or a minor, and required courses include research methods, statistics, systems neuroscience, cellular neuroscience, and cell biology. A study-abroad exchange option, including a program with Maastricht University in the Netherlands, is available. Students enter the Faculty of Science as undeclared majors and formally declare neuroscience at the end of first year, subject to minimum grades in the department's introductory psychology, neuroscience, and biology courses. The program suits students who want a biologically grounded approach to studying brain and behaviour, whether heading toward graduate study in neuroscience-related fields, professional programs such as medicine or audiology, or direct entry into roles such as neuroimaging technician, data scientist, or genetic counsellor within research, biotechnology, or the pharmaceutical industry.
