Overview

Physics at Dalhousie University is an undergraduate Bachelor of Science program offered through the Faculty of Science at the Halifax and Truro campuses. The curriculum examines the fundamental properties of energy and matter and their application to real-world problems, beginning with foundation courses in physics, mathematics, and chemistry in the first two years before moving into specialized topics such as quantum physics, stellar evolution, atmospheric science, and solid-state physics in years three and four. The program includes laboratory work and research opportunities, along with an optional co-op component offering three paid work terms integrated with academic study. Students can pursue concentrated honours, combined degrees, majors, or minors, with suggested course sets available in areas such as astrophysics, computational physics, biophysics, environmental physics, and materials physics. The program suits students interested in understanding physical systems and developing technological solutions, including those drawn to research or careers in high-tech industries and government institutions. Graduates go on to roles such as meteorologists, medical physicists, data analysts, and researchers.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 75.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct entry from a completed Grade 12 requires a minimum overall average of 75 percent, including Academic English 12, Pre-calculus Math 12, and three further academic Grade 12 subjects; Bachelor of Science applicants enter as undeclared majors and formally declare Physics at the end of first year. Students missing a prerequisite can use Dalhousie's UPrep courses (for example in pre-calculus, chemistry or physics) to complete it before starting the degree. Admission is competitive, so meeting the minimum average does not guarantee a place. International applicants are assessed on the same subject list through Dalhousie's equivalency tables and must also meet the university's English-language requirement unless exempt, for example IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or TOEFL iBT 90 overall with no section below 20. The programme's own page does not state a specific intake month.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Dalhousie's live Dates and Deadlines page still shows the September 2026 entry cycle as of mid-September 2026, not the 2027 cycle. For that cycle, Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) and Bachelor of Social Work close February 15, 2026; the Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies (Architecture) closes March 1, 2026; and the Health Sciences post-diploma option closes June 15, 2026. All other undergraduate programmes are considered on a rolling, space-available basis for both domestic and international applicants, with no separate international closing date published; May 15, 2026 is only the deposit and English-proficiency deadline, not an application deadline. Dalhousie has not yet published September 2027 entry dates. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
