Program details

Overview

Atmospheric Science and Physics is a joint program administered by the Department of Physics and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences. It examines the physical processes that produce weather and climate, including short- and long-range weather and climate prediction, severe weather, climate variability, the ozone hole, and air-sea interactions, with attention to global warming and air quality. Atmospheric processes are studied primarily through the lens of physics, covering topics such as how water condenses into precipitation, how radiative heating of the ground and atmosphere occurs, and how the atmosphere and ocean interact to shape weather and climate systems. Students complete coursework spanning both physics and atmospheric science, gaining a combined understanding of how the two disciplines connect. Graduates are prepared for further study or careers in meteorology, climate science, and other physical sciences fields that require a joint background in physics and atmospheric processes.
