The Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy at Dalhousie University is a small, research-intensive doctoral program in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Candidates complete coursework and comprehensive examinations before undertaking an original dissertation, under faculty supervision, in an area of philosophy chosen in consultation with their supervisor. The program is delivered in person in Halifax, begins in September, and is offered on either a full-time or part-time basis, with a standard length of five years or longer to completion. Departmental figures indicate that most graduates go on to tenure-track academic appointments or other positions for which doctoral-level philosophical training is considered essential. Admission requires applicants to meet Dalhousie's Faculty of Graduate Studies minimum entrance requirements together with the Department of Philosophy's own program-specific admission criteria, assessed individually before an offer is made.
