Overview
The Master of Science in Psychology and Neuroscience is a thesis-based graduate program delivered in person at Dalhousie's Halifax campus on a full-time basis, with standard completion set at two years or longer. The program follows an apprenticeship model in which students work closely with a faculty supervisor on original research rather than progressing through an extensive coursework sequence. Applicants choose between two streams: Experimental Psychology, which examines human and animal behaviour and the neural mechanisms behind it, and Neuroscience, which draws on psychology, biology, genetics, biochemistry, and physiology to study brain structure and function. In both streams, students design, carry out, and defend an independent thesis project. The program suits students who prioritize research training, scholarly inquiry, and independent thinking over a primarily course-based degree, and who plan to pursue further doctoral study or research-adjacent careers. Graduates have gone on to work in community services, human resources, residential care, student services, and forensic settings, in addition to continuing to PhD programs. Admission Requirements: Applicants need a four-year Honours bachelor's degree from a Canadian university, or its equivalent elsewhere, with at least an A- average; the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience's own admission page does not convert this into a numeric GPA or scale, and applicants must clearly indicate whether they are applying to the Psychology stream or the Neuroscience stream. No program-specific English-language test score is published for this general MSc track; non-native English speakers are directed to Dalhousie's international-admissions requirements instead. All other undergraduate programmes are considered on a rolling, space-available basis for both domestic and international applicants, with no separate international closing date published; May 15, 2026 is only the deposit and English-proficiency deadline, not an application deadline.
