Overview
As the impact of climate change continues to escalate, environmental technicians play a key role in helping conserve Canada’s ecosystem and protecting the health of communities from environmental contaminants. Gain the knowledge to evaluate, monitor and control potential risks to the environment and public health and assist in environmental protection and sustainability efforts, including the prevention, control and elimination of environmental hazards and remediation of contaminated sites. Participate in hands-on learning in classrooms, science and computer labs and outdoors to prepare for the work environment. Be eligible to register to become a certified technician through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) after graduation.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Durham College's minimum entry is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or Mature Student Status. The Environmental Technician diploma adds Grade 12 English at the C or U level and Grade 12 mathematics at the C, M or U level, with Grade 12 chemistry recommended but not required; it states no minimum admission average. The program page states no English-language test score of its own for international applicants and points to Durham's institution-wide requirement for certificate, diploma and advanced diploma programs, set out on the college's international admissions page: IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 80 with no section below 20, PTE Academic 53 overall with no section below 49, CAEL 60 overall with no section below 60, or Duolingo English Test 105; domestic applicants may instead evidence English with the required Grade 12 English credit.
