Amanda is a full-time faculty member in the Faculty of Social and Community Services. Amanda obtained her Honours Bachelor degree with a double major in Psychology and Sociology from Trent University. Following that, Amanda completed the Addictions and Mental Health Graduate Certificate offered here at Durham College. After working a number of years in the mental health field, Amanda applied and was successfully admitted to complete her Masters of Education (MEd) in Counselling and Psychotherapy through the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Amanda has worked at non-profit organizations in a role as a Case Manager as well as in Group Living Support. She has experience working as an Addictions Specialist for a Community Mental Health program affiliated with Northumberland Hills Hospital and she has worked in a Mental Health Worker role supporting College students prior to taking on a faculty teaching position with Durham College. Amanda’s research interests are in applied research and she has experience co-leading a major research grant entitled Raising Resilient Families: Empowering Parents with Cognitive Challenges. The Practical Nursing program option for internationally educated nurses is designed for applicants with nursing credentials from outside of Canada. It has been designed as a means to apply your nursing academic knowledge and skills from colleges and universities in other countries into the Ontario health care system. Successful graduates, who become registered practical nurses (RPNs), will combine knowledge, skills and good judgment to provide safe, competent, ethical nursing care to meet the needs of all patients throughout the continuum of care.
Practicum allows students to apply their learning with a variety of clinically supervised practicum experiences that are designed to prepare you to function as a graduate in diverse settings. Placements are located at various local hospitals and agencies throughout Durham Region and at times, in the immediate surrounding areas. Placements may take place on weekdays or weekends with the exception of Semester 5, Professional Practice V (consolidation), where students are expected to be available to follow their preceptor’s schedule. Students are responsible for their own transportation to attend practicum. Please note that hospital placement may begin as early as 06:00 hours.
The Practical Nursing (PSW-PN bridge) is for students who successfully complete each of the PSW to PN bridge courses with the minimum grades listed in the Admission Requirements below. Successful candidates will be granted advanced standing into semester 2 of the Practical Nursing (PNII) program. The Practical Nursing program is designed to prepare graduates who are able to meet the challenges of the expanding role of nursing in today’s society. The Social Service Worker program combines academic study with practical experience to provide graduates with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to work in the diverse and complex field of community and social services. The program focuses on the development of front-line interviewing and counselling skills that will prepare students to work with individuals and groups in a variety of social service settings, including group homes, women’s shelters, addiction and mental health facilities, employment programs and services for seniors. Graduates of the Social Service Worker program are eligible to apply for the Community Mental Health – Honours Bachelor (Transfer Pathway for Social Service Worker diploma) degree program. This allows you to earn two credentials in just four years: your Ontario College Diploma and an Honours Bachelor’s degree.
The final component of the program is an integrated practicum, which includes 120 hours (ten, 12-hour shifts) of clinical practice in an adult critical care practice environment. This intensive clinical experience allows registered nurses to synthesize their learning and develop confidence in real-world critical care settings. Through practicum, learners will demonstrate competency in the Standards of Practice for Critical Care Nursing in Ontario under the direct preceptorship or mentorship of an experienced critical care nurse and the facilitation of a Durham College Field Placement Advisor. Throughout practicum, students build professional autonomy while applying evidence-informed care principles that are central to all nursing programs in Ontario.
Through our recreational therapy diploma program, students develop expertise in creating therapeutic interventions that address cognitive, physical, emotional, spiritual and social needs. This program incorporates two field placements in the community so our students have the hands-on experience to launch their careers in the field with confidence. First year students starting the Electromechanical Engineering Technology program in September 2026 Students in the Electromechanical Engineering Technology Advanced Diploma program will be invited to apply to the co-op option during their second first academic semester. Entrance to the co-op option is limited, and the processes for securing a work term are competitive. Students enrolled in the co-op option as of the 2026-2027 academic year are now required to complete two four-month, paid work terms totalling 840 hours. Work terms are scheduled between semesters two and three and four and five of the Electromechanical program.

Subsequently, at OCA and Array International Architects in Toronto, Ontario, Ali served as an intern architect and architect, contributing to many projects in Canada and abroad. Transitioning to project management at Trow Associates (Exp), Canada, Ali demonstrated his proficiency in LEED projects. His responsibilities included reviewing architectural drawings for durability, conducting building envelopes investigative analyses, and performing energy audits and modeling for various buildings, showcasing his dedication to sustainable and energy-efficient design practices. Throughout his career, Ali has seamlessly blended architectural practice with academia.
