Program details
Overview
The PhD in Electrical Engineering at Polytechnique Montreal develops advanced knowledge, intellectual rigour, scientific curiosity, and creativity for high-level professional practice, research, and university teaching. Coursework builds the ability to evaluate scientific literature and apply rigorous methods of reasoning and experimentation, while the research component lets candidates deepen and extend knowledge in their chosen specialty. Doctoral studies in computer engineering may also be pursued under electrical engineering faculty supervision, through an arrangement with the Department of Computer and Software Engineering. The programme totals 90 credits: a minimum of 15 credits of graduate coursework and 75 credits of research leading to a doctoral thesis. Candidates who already hold a graduate degree may be exempted from all or part of the coursework credits, under the conditions set out in the general regulations for graduate studies. Graduates receive the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.).
Requirements
Admission Requirements: To be admitted to a doctoral program, candidates must hold a bachelor's or master's degree from Polytechnique Montreal or a recognized equivalent, have a strong academic record, and secure the agreement of a professor willing to supervise the research. A strong academic record alone does not guarantee admission to the program; the candidate must also obtain a professor's commitment to supervise the thesis.
