Polytechnique Montréal is a French-language public engineering school affiliated with the Université de Montréal and sharing its campus on the northern slope of Mount Royal in Montréal, Québec.
It teaches and researches engineering exclusively: undergraduate study leads to a 120-credit Bachelor of Engineering (baccalauréat en ingénierie, B.Ing.) in one of twelve specialisations — aerospace, biomedical, chemical, civil, electrical, geological, industrial, computer, software, mechanical, mining and engineering physics — normally completed in four years, with one to four mandatory four-month paid internships built into the sequence. Applicants who finished secondary school outside Québec and have no subsequent post-secondary study first complete an integrated 30-credit preparatory year, bringing the total to five years.
The B.Ing. carries automatic eligibility for membership in the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec, the provincial body that regulates the engineer title.
Teaching is organised across seven departments plus a biomedical engineering unit operated jointly with Université de Montréal.
Graduate study spans research and professional master's degrees, DESS diplomas, second-cycle microprogrammes and doctorates across the same engineering fields. The student body numbers more than 10,300, of whom 29% come from outside Canada, representing 97 countries, and 29% are women.
All instruction is in French, and applicants schooled in an education system Polytechnique does not recognise as francophone must present a French-language test result before their academic file is assessed.
