Overview
Study a variety of procedures used to assess and treat challenging behaviours presented by individuals with autism / Autism Spectrum Disorder such as functional behavioural assessment and functional analysis and scientifically validated techniques for the treatment of challenging behaviours, e.g., stereotypy, pica, aggression, self-injury, etc. With emphasis on ethical techniques, treatment models will include antecedent control strategies, schedules of reinforcement, extinction, differential reinforcement strategies, social stories, desensitization procedures, and decelerative procedures. Pre-requisite: Intro to Applied Behavioural Analysis, Intro to Autism Spectrum Disorder, Specialized Instructional Strategies, Ethics & Professionalism, Behavioural Skill Building. Requisite: Enrolment into the Autism and Behavioural Science graduate certificate program. Admission Requirements: Admission requires an Ontario College Diploma, Ontario College Advanced Diploma, or a university degree (or equivalent) in a related field such as behavioural science, child studies, education, psychology, social work, sociology, early childhood education, child and youth care, developmental services work, or social service work; courses must be completed in the sequence listed, and the certificate must be finished within five years of starting. The programme page does not state an English-proficiency test score; Fleming College's institution-wide tier for graduate-certificate programs applies: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 88, Duolingo 120, or PTE Academic 56. International applicants submit an equivalent post-secondary credential as certified, notarized transcripts with notarized English translations where required, per Fleming's general admission requirements.
