I came from a sales background in electronics and had very little hands-on experience with tools. A friend had taken the Fleming Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician (HRAC) program and suggested I take it too. After some research, I applied and nervously entered the program. I wasn't sure what to expect or if I would be able to succeed in a trades environment, but the instructors were extremely patient and understanding. They started with the basic of the basics and built my foundation of knowledge up. Every course had unique challenges but the instructors had my back every step of the way. They assured me that with the right attitude and effort I would be successful, they hit the nail right on the head! By third semester I was much more confident in my abilities and kept building on that foundation from previous semesters. The individual lessons and topics started to come together, I was making connections, and started to see “HVAC” as a whole.

I was hired on as a welder at Rockwerx Canada Inc. a couple of weeks after finishing the Welding Techniques program. The company builds rock climbing walls, and I do everything from shipping, HR, accounting and general operations at the office, to various aspects of on-site construction. I wear many hats, and because I don’t have a specific job title, my business card says “boss like.” I decided to take the Welding Techniques program because, when I was about to graduate with my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, I realized that jobs in my field weren’t exactly plentiful or well-paid. So, I wanted to have a trade to fall back on. I had done some welding while doing metal sculptures for my degree, and I really liked it. I’m so glad I entered the trades because I love my job, I’ve been able to travel to some amazing places (such as Qatar), and when I wake up in the morning, I’m stoked to go to work.

"Pre-health exceeded my expectations and laid the groundwork for where I am today. I’ve never been a math or science-brained person, but this program gave me the confidence and foundational knowledge I needed to pursue a science degree. I’m currently working full-time for medical tech company (also thanks to Pre-Health) while completing my B.Sc. in Biology through Athabasca University, with plans to pursue advanced studies in the medical field upon completion. My background in first response, health care and technology has shaped a clear career path, and Pre-health was the first step in making it possible. The teachers genuinely want you to succeed, and the reserved program spots for high-achieving students give you that extra motivation when the work gets tough. Fish and wildlife management is an important aspect of modern society as it helps to conserve and maintain healthy populations of fish and wildlife, their habitats, and biodiversity. Effective management practices ensure the long-term sustainability of these resources and help mitigate the impacts of human activities such as overfishing and habitat destruction. By understanding the interrelationships between species, habitats, and human activities, wildlife managers can make informed decisions about how to conserve and manage these resources. This is especially important as the world's growing human population continues to put increasing pressure on wildlife and their habitats. The remaining course requirements are PLAR eligible. This means that given the extensive experience students in this program have working with children in play based programs, they may be able to demonstrate that they meet the course learning outcomes without direct teaching. Each identified course has a PLAR assessment, and they vary depending on the learning outcomes they are assessing. They may be designed in the format of a test, of a portfolio, an assignment or even a test. Should a student be successful with their PLAR attempt, their earned grade is added to their official transcript. If they are unsuccessful with their PLAR attempt, they will need to register in that particular course in a future semester. It should be noted that if a student is registering in a PLAR eligible course, it is delivered face to face. You can read more about PLARing.
