Overview
Students develop the skill set to provide a client-centered and client driven continuum of treatment for individuals with addiction problems. With a strong framework of individual and group counselling skills, students study individual, gender, and societal considerations and the resulting treatment implications through the lens of trauma informed care. They practice motivational interviewing techniques, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and dialectal behaviour therapy (DBT) while learning to match client needs with intervention options. In addition, students reconstruct education and prevention strategies in an effort to design, facilitate and evaluate such tools.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Georgian College's Addictions and Mental Health programme page, which also covers this part-time online route, asks for a prior Ontario College Diploma, Advanced Diploma, degree or equivalent, ideally specialising in health and wellness, human services, social work or the social sciences; the program coordinator assesses how closely other credentials relate. It recommends, rather than mandates, an overall post-secondary average of about 65 per cent, C+, or a 2.5 GPA. No standardised English-language test score is published for this route. Because this option is taken through continuing education, admission is on a course-by-course, rolling basis rather than a single program intake, and students must still obtain a clear criminal reference check and vulnerable sector check no more than three months ahead of any placement component, with an unpardoned record potentially preventing completion. Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca: 1 February 2027 is the equal-consideration date for Georgian's highly competitive programs, which now covers Fall 2027, Winter 2028 and Summer 2028 entry, and later applications are assessed first-come, first-served while seats last; offers of admission for this 2026-2027 cycle must be accepted by 1 May 2027. Programs outside the highly competitive list carry no equal-consideration date and are assessed on a rolling basis year-round. International applicants apply directly through Georgian's own portal with no published closing date and are assessed on a rolling basis while seats remain, though Georgian warns a program open when applied to may close before assessment. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
