Power Engineering – Third Class at Great Plains College is an on-campus, full-time credential delivered at the Swift Current campus that builds on a Fourth Class Power Engineering license. Over four months, running May to August, students study applied mechanics, chemistry and metallurgy, codes and calculations, thermodynamics, combustion and piping, controls and instrumentation, electricity, refrigeration, prime movers and plant auxiliaries, pumps and compressors, steam generation, and water treatment. The program includes a mandatory three-week power lab in Saskatoon for students who did not complete lab training there while earning their Fourth Class designation, plus a student-funded 60-hour work placement. Coursework prepares students to write the provincial Third Class interprovincial power engineering licensing exam. Admission requires a valid Fourth Class Power Engineering license and completion of, or exemption from, the orientation lab; English language proficiency requirements also apply. The program suits licensed Fourth Class power engineers advancing toward higher-class certification and roles operating and maintaining industrial boilers, pumps, and HVAC and refrigeration systems.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a valid Fourth Class Power Engineering license. A mandatory orientation lab is required unless it was already completed at the Saskatchewan Polytechnic lab in Saskatoon while obtaining the Fourth Class designation.
