Overview
The Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Major in English is a 120-credit programme in Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Faculty of Arts, with 63 of those credits in English coursework. It builds on the standard English major with a heavier concentration of upper-level literature and theory courses and an increased emphasis on research and writing. Students begin with introductory university writing and literary-study courses, then choose from 2000- to 4000-level courses covering critical theory, film theory, medieval to contemporary British literature, American and Canadian literature, and postcolonial and Indigenous literature. To declare the Honours stream, students must have completed at least 60 credits, hold a cumulative and program GPA of 3.3, and have completed ENGL 2250. In their final year, students complete either an Honours Thesis Project or additional seminar courses. Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts (Honours), Major in English and are positioned for graduate school, law school, or further research- and writing-intensive study or employment.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Students first gain admission to Kwantlen Polytechnic University's Bachelor of Arts programme, where the Faculty of Arts's admission requirements apply, consisting of KPU's Undergraduate English Proficiency Requirement (met through BC English Studies 12 or an equivalent, university-level English coursework, or an approved English test score such as IELTS Academic 6.5 overall). Students then declare the Major in English by the time they complete 60 credits of undergraduate coursework, having completed at least 18 credits including 3 credits of ENGL at the 1100 level or higher and 6 credits at the 1100 level or higher in English, each with a minimum grade of C, while remaining in good academic standing. To declare the Honours stream specifically, students must have completed 60 or more credits, achieved a cumulative and program GPA of 3.3, and completed ENGL 2250 (Approaches to Literary Study).
