Overview
The Gerontology Diploma is a two-year programme developing advanced skills and knowledge for roles in programme development, administration, and management within services for older adults. Graduates are prepared to deliver services that prevent social isolation and promote the mental, physical, and emotional health of older adults, supporting them to age in place within their communities. The curriculum combines theory with practicum placements across settings such as health and wellness, education, recreation, community support, advocacy, residential, and palliative care, developed with support from the local senior-serving agency sector. Students may also build toward the diploma from Langara's one-year Social Service Worker (Gerontology) Certificate, transferring credits into the diploma. Courses are offered full-time, part-time, or hybrid, with a September intake. As of the Fall 2025 semester, admissions to the diploma have been suspended.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants need BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent) or must be 19 years of age or older; international applicants need BC Grade 12 graduation or the equivalent. The English language requirement is Category 2, met through English 12 (or equivalent) with a minimum of 70%, or an approved English proficiency assessment. Additional requirements include a completed Gerontology supplemental application form, an interview with a program faculty member, prior volunteer or paid experience in the human service field (preferably at least 60 hours), and two letters of reference, with preference given to applicants who are at least 21 years of age; opportunities for required practicum placements are limited for students under 21. Admission is competitive and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance; accepted students must complete a criminal record check submitted to the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
