Overview

The Legal - Office Assistant Certificate provides core administrative office skills combined with legal-specific coursework, including basic legal theory and legal office procedures, to prepare students for entry-level roles as legal assistants. The program runs from September to June across three terms, totalling 45 credits, and includes a four-week field placement in a legal or related office setting. Coursework covers keyboarding, document production, office technology, and legal terminology alongside general administrative procedures. Graduates are prepared to work as legal assistants or word processing operators in law offices, government legal departments, or private industry legal departments. The program is delivered through MacEwan University's School of Continuing Education and combines classroom instruction with practical, hands-on training in legal office software and procedures used in day-to-day legal practice.

Minimum GPA: 60.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Regular admission requires a minimum overall average of 60 percent, with no course grade lower than 50 percent, in ELA 30-1 or ELA 30-2 plus two additional subjects from the approved subject groups. Applicants with 9 or more post-secondary credits must present a minimum Admission Grade Point Average (AGPA) of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Mature applicants, 20 years of age or older and out of full-time high school for at least one year, need a minimum overall average of 60 percent, with no course grade lower than 50 percent, in ELA 30-1 or 30-2, or three university-level English credits with a minimum grade of C-. All applicants must meet an acceptable level of English language proficiency, demonstrated through official transcripts or standardized language evaluation results.
